Monumental Artifacts
There are many places in Cape Breton where homes have been left by families or children of families who looked for somewhere else to make a living or to change a life. There are remnants in theses places of the structures that were the framework of lives once led there, of houses, sheds, barns, fences. They are now derelict, devolving into the earth.
I am profoundly moved by the sight of these structures when I find them on my walks through the Cape Breton highlands. I once referred to them as monuments but that implies a reverence on our part that’s not in evidence. If these artifacts are monuments, my exploration of similar relics has yet to disclose their significance. However, they do tell me, and with some force, that they are more than the men who made them, else how do they remain?
